Public Fountain, 2017
Archival print of the original oil painting printed on 8" x 10" MOAB entrada rag bright white paper.
I painted this shortly after the last election. During a trip to NYC, my daughter was playing in a fountain with other kids, whoever was around, like they do. So simple. I was thinking about how not so long ago it might not have been legal in some places for these kids to share a pool or a drinking fountain. As I painted it, the spouts of water seemed like specters from the past, still here. Cruelties they were born into, that they are forced to navigate, robbing them on some level of their innocence. But that water is also dancing and flowing and a physical manifestation of basic shared joys.
